Apple says sparking first-gen iPod nanos will be replaced...
The first generation iPod nano used a 3.7V Lithium-polymer battery that was infamously soldered to the logic board connected by a red, white, and black lead. While none of the iPods are user serviceable by default, all nanos of this generation should be well outside of the included warranty, and the batteries can be replaced by a reputable service center. Alternately, those with the required soldering skills can order a kit for around $15.
Apple stated that, to its knowledge, no one has been seriously hurt because of the malfunctioning batteries yet. Even so, if you have an overheating iPod, Apple says to call AppleCare and faulty units will be replaced. There is no indication whether these overheating batteries are the same as the iPod sparking in Japan last March.
